  16. <p>Ash and particles in the air seem to make the ozone hole worse
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    The primary cause of the hole in the Earth's protective ozone
  19. layer is a group of man-made chemicals called
  20. chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), used in refrigerators, air
  21. conditioners and plastic foams. The chlorine released when these
  22. compounds decompose attacks ozone, letting dangerous ultraviolet
  23. light from the sun shine through.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>    But a report in Nature suggests that nature can help the
  26. process along. Ozone depletion was expected to be reasonably
  27. mild in 1991; instead, it was severe. That year also saw major
  28. eruptions by Mount Hudson in Chile and Mount Pinatubo in the
  29. Philippines. Volcanoes release enormous amounts of dust. Dust,
  30. along with ice crystals, provides surfaces where
  31. ozone-destruction chemistry works most efficiently.
  32. Unfortunately, while the industrial world is phasing out CFCs
  33. before the turn of the century, other compounds are also ozone
  34. destroyers -- and volcano control is somewhat farther off.
